Summer of Sherlock - The Casebook of Sherlock Howls and Dogster Watson
A Family Engagement Project Celebrating Portsmouth’s Literary Heritage
In recognition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s historic connection to Portsmouth—where he wrote his first Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet—a series of family-oriented events and creative activities took place across the city.
At the heart of the programme is The Casebook of Sherlock Howls and Dogster Watson, a playful and imaginative initiative designed to introduce families to Portsmouth’s literary past through accessible and engaging experiences. Families were invited to take part in drop-in creative workshops held at various community venues, where children and their parents could explore storytelling, problem-solving, and artistic expression inspired by the world of Sherlock Holmes.
On September 13th in centeral library's childerens reading area, the project culminated in an interactive puzzle trail, where participants were guided by the fictional canine detective puppets, Sherlock Howls and Dogster Watson. This immersive trail encouraged families to solve clues whilst uncovering a narrative that brings the spirit of detective fiction to life. We also attended the Summer Reading Challenge Celebration Event at Southsea Castle on the 5th of October, so we would like to thank everybody who attended!
This project aims to celebrate local heritage, encourage family learning, and foster community participation through fun and meaningful cultural engagement.
