Using Portsmouth's unique Conan Doyle Collection, community groups have been examining the contrasts and similarities between Victorian Portsmouth, where Sherlock Holmes was created, and the City they live in now. The themes that groups research will be creatively showcased through theatre performance, a podcast and a piece of creative writing or artwork.
Four exhibitions detailing all the groups' finding will be on display in the Central Library throughout August and September 2026.
Funded by the Arts Council England, National Lottery Project Grants.
Cosham Reading Friends
The Cosham Reading Friends group looked at some of Arthur Conan Doyle's Victorian counterparts, authors who were also in the public eye at the time, like HG Wells (War of the Worlds) and Oscar Wilde (The Picture of Dorian Grey). This led to the group investigating Doyle's sporting career - there was an Authors cricket group - the Allahakbarries, set up by JM Barrie (Peter Pan). Doyle was a passionate sportsman and involved in every sport imaginable.
Inspiration
Our aim is to publicise the Conan Doyle Collection locally and internationally. To do this, we attend and create local events and work with other partners on projects to promote access and to the Collection.- Tactile cubes and stories created by local community groups based upon Sherlock Holmes' stories
- A re-working of A Study in Scarlet in graphic novel form, aimed at Key Stage 2 but enjoyable for all Sherlock enthusiasts!
